The first batch of fudge I ever made, I gave to Teddy Kennedy. He was staying at my parent’s bed and breakfast in Maine, and one morning, while he and his wife were reading the paper and having breakfast I went over and gave them a plate of what my parents later (years later) confessed was a terrible concoction. He ate the whole plateful, and told me it was delicious. I don’t know what that says about politicians, or that fudge recipe, but it was one of my first cooking triumphs (or so I thought), as well as my first understanding of the political scene. I was thrilled when someone recently told me about Yes We Cake, a blog devoted to people sending in pictures of homemade cakes decorated for and devoted to the change we need. Naturally they’re frosted in the red, white, and Obama that’s been painting this blue, blue state ever more vibrantly. “I looked into the oven and I saw the future rising,” writes Nora Leah Sherman, of the blog The Great American Cooking Project.
